This module allows you to configure the workgroup and browser service on your Windows 95, 98, and ME clients.
Filter:
Select the name of the filter you want assigned to this configuration element.
Browser Service:
The browser service lets you track the computers available on the network. In a domain infrastructure, the browser service will typically operate on your servers. You can reduce the amount of network traffic generated by disabling the browser service on Windows 9x based clients (Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME).
NOTE: Disabling the browser service on Windows 9x clients located on network subnets without a server is not recommended and can cause an incomplete browse list. Please insure you understand the operation of the browser service prior to disabling it on Windows 9x clients.
Workgroup:
Enter the workgroup name you want assigned. A workgroup name can be up to 15 characters in length but it cannot be the same as the computer name.
Alert User if Restart Needed:
A change to either the browser service or the workgroup requires a restart to take effect. If this option is selected, a restart needed message box will be displayed to the user.
Example:
Filter: Global Settings
Browser Service: Disable
Workgroup: DEVELOPMENT
Alert User if Restart Needed: Selected
The above example will disable the browser service and set the workgroup name to DEVELOPMENT on Windows 9x clients. If a restart is needed, a message box will be displayed.
